Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)

Must've been in my head 'cause I insisted that Amber give me sleepy embraces before she left for work this morning. Did not know this was a Gary Glitter cover til writing this entry. It's pretty true, 'cept faster and harder. Expect no less from Joan Jett.

Artist (cover): Joan Jett
Artist (original): Gary Glitter
Year: 1980/1973

  1. Hrm, not sure how I feel about the implications of a "true" cover versus a "not true" (or "false"?) cover. Then again, "faithful" is also often used. If any of these were used in a completely diagnostic way, I don't think it would bother me as much. But they usually seem to have a judgment implied that has a whiff of purism in it for me. Maybe this is also just because I happen to really enjoy tremendously "adulterated" covers. In fact, I think I prefer them. Why else bother to redo a song?

  2. Point taken, and I agree. I didn't use "true" in a purism sense; I used it in the sense that is descriptive of how much or little a cover wavers from the arrangement of the original. This one isn't much different except for the tempo and guitar effects. I wouldn't claim that any covers are "false," but I do think some covers are awful. If a cover sounds exactly like the original, I agree it's kind of pointless. But Joan Jett's version has significant enough differences both musically and in terms of genre and subculture appeal that it's noteworthy. This could be a way longer conversation. Maybe we should take it to lunch soon!
